Evaluation 3- What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

My magazine would be new to the market. It would be key that I chose a good distributer. I would need one that could reach out to my target audience and social group and also giving my magazine an excellent status. In this question, I am going to look at two distributers who are probably the biggest in the world. These two distributers are IPC Media and Bauer. I am going to explain why these would be good distributors to my music magazine.

IPC Media

IPC Media produces 60 brands that has the capability to reach out to a wide audience. Their audience is huge as they can reach out to almost two thirds of woman in the United Kingdom and 42% of the men in the United Kingdom. Many well-known magazines such as NME are distributed by IPC Media and NME is a huge music magazine and consequently they would be a great company to get involved in with my magazine. There aren’t many similarities with my magazine and the NME magazine because of the genres which are shown in my magazine and the genres in the NME magazine are very different from each other. Even though there isn’t a strong link with my magazine and the NME magazine, I think that IPC Media would be a great distributor for my magazine. This is because the genre of my magazine which is Electro house is a huge genre across the world and have many big names in this industry such as the likes of Tiesto and David Guetta etc. This distributor would benefit me and my magazine because it would be a great opportunity for me and my magazine and would benefit for this genre which there aren’t many magazines made for this genre and could increase the market for my magazine. There aren’t any problems with this distributor. This is because a lot of the magazines distributed from IPC Media, the genre is Indie for a lot of them so if they distributed my magazine it would be a different one for the market.

Bauer

Bauer music offers many magazines from up to 15 countries. There are over 300 magazines in these 15 countries as well as online, radio stations and TV. One of the biggest music magazines ever made is Kerrang. Bauer is the distributer for this magazine and as it distributes one of the biggest music magazines out on the market, I believe that this one could also be a good distributer for my magazine alongside with IPC Media. Even though my magazine isn’t the same genre as Kerrang, I believe that is Bauer distributed my magazine one day it could be up there as one of the best on the market with the likes of Kerrang and NME etc. Bauer media is also a multi-platform United Kingdom based media group therefore once my magazine became recognised, it could be possible for them to help me launch into other areas such as radio and TV like Kerrang has done.

Both distributers have their own advantages and disadvantages. Overall, I think Bauer would be the best possible distributer for my magazine. This is because the likes of Kerrang have made their magazine well-known across many countries and have places on TV and radio stations so for my music magazine to go that far and get on these many things would be a huge success for me and the genre of music.

Evaluation 2- How does your media product represent particular social groups?

How does your media product represent particular social groups?
In my magazine cover, contents page and 2 page spread, I tried to show different features when creating the magazine to make it represent my target social group with is teenagers and above. On my 2 page spread, I have an image of one of the artists in my magazine who is the main feature of the magazine. This image includes a snap back hat to show the coolness side of the artist. Also, I made it look like he was at a music festival and he was about to go out on stage. I made him wear casual clothes as DJ artists wear them when they’re performing. This indicates the teenage look as they wear casual clothing most of their childhood. I think this style reflects the style of my target audience and so the magazine represents their social group. Costume has a big part in my magazine. I had made a feature in my magazine that there was a music awards in my magazine. I had used pictures I had taken of my mates in their suits. I had used these images for the music awards in my magazine. The reason I used this was that schools have end of year proms for students leaving school and they like to dress in a smart way with the shoes and tie etc. So this is why I used these as teenagers like to dress this way on special occasions. I feel that my images set a teenage look on my contents page as there is a big picture of lads dressed in the smart way. This represents the teenage look on special occasions. Also, my magazine has a happy feeling towards my images and with the people on the images smiling indicates the happy feeling towards my magazine. The main reasons used these images is that music awards are common throughout each year and I wanted to do something different to what everyone else did in my class. To some extent, I think that this idea can link in with the audience and social groups in which I have done my magazine for. This is because music can be a big thing in a teenager’s childhood and music awards can get really exciting for them in their childhood as they want to see their favourite bands or artists win big awards so this is why I have done this in my magazine.

Evaluation 1- In my music magazine cover, contents page and two page spread, I wanted to grab the audience’s attention by making it look as professional as I could. I came up with the name ‘ElectroMag’ for the masthead of my magazine cover. I came up with this name for the masthead because the genre of my magazine is Electro House and I wanted to merge the genre into my masthead by using the word ‘Electro’. From some of my research I did, I learnt that the names of the magazines I researched are names that aren’t merged with the genre of the magazine. I wanted to do something different with my masthead and merge it with the genre of the magazine.

Title of Magazine
In my music magazine cover, contents page and two page spread, I wanted to grab the audience’s attention by making it look as professional as I could. This is my masthead compared to the ‘Vibe’ magazines masthead. As you can see, mine is a lot plainer than the Vibe masthead. I wanted my masthead to fit in with the dark background without all the edits and shades in my masthead. The white font colour would hopefully be the first thing my target audience would see in my magazine. This is because the white font colour is bright and it goes with the dark background colours. Also, my masthead font doesn’t look extreme, as it would like on the ‘Kerrang’ magazine masthead. This is because the genre of my magazine isn’t very extreme compared to the genres heavy metal etc. my genre has the chillness and the relaxed way you would want to feel when listening to the music from my genre. This is why I have used the basic font and the colours etc. In the Kerrang magazine, the heads of the artist are covering the title. This looked very appealing to me. This is an example of that the producer of the magazine wants to let their target audience know that he is the main feature of the magazine. This is why I did this in my magazine so I could let my target audience know that the people in my magazine cover are the main feature in the magazine.

Images in the Magazine
The images in my magazine are all basically around the same thing. I had an idea of having a music awards section in my magazine, which I put into my contents page. I used pictures I already had taken of people I knew in suits and smart clothes. This made it look like a music awards because people where smart clothes on occasions like this so this in my mind was a very good idea to think of. This represented that this addition of the magazine I made would be a big one. I made it look like the awards was a big thing in the world of music so I used various pictures of this. Also the main feature of my magazine I had a picture from this music awards of the person who was the main feature of my magazine.

Mise-en-scene

In my magazine, the background in my magazine cover was black from the top and fading into a grey colour from the bottom. I used this because I didn’t want the background of my front cover to have a plain background. The grey at the bottom suggests for me that if the colours are getting lighter the happiness of the magazine when I links to the music and genre. In the contents page, I have used the colours red and black mostly. I have used these colours because I think that they go with the white background I had. The black around the sides and the red at the bottom shows the edges of the page itself. These colours go well together and I tried to make it look as professional as I could so I could compare it to other music magazines. I did the same with my two-page spread. I did this because I yet again had a white background and I felt that the colours red and black would go well with this. My text I had written and pictures go well with this to make it look as professional as I could.
